The 20 most useful Android smartphone apps of 2011

The Android Market may not have as many apps as the iPhone App Store yet, but there are still more than enough to be overwhelmed, and it continues to grow at a breakneck pace.

Remember that I primarily had business professionals in mind when making this list and also keep in mind that this is a snapshot in time. The Android platform is developing so quickly that I guarantee my home screen will look different a month from now.
Still, here’s my list of tried-and-true Android apps that I can highly recommend.

The 20 best apps for the iPad

Keep in mind that this list is skewed toward professionals and technophiles who are using the iPad on a daily basis, but I also realize that these folks tend to use tablets like the iPad for non-work stuff as well, like reading the news in the morning during breakfast or a little entertainment on the plane during a business flight.

The 20 best and most useful iPhone apps

The 20 best and most useful iPhone apps
Mobile apps have become an embarrassment of riches for iPhone and Android. In a world with over 500,000 iPhone apps and over 250,000 Android apps, the toughest part is finding the most useful stuff.

1. Camera+

The iPhone has developed into a strong platform for photography. The iPhone camera sensors keep getting better and better and the software is solid. But, one of the things that really makes the iPhone great as a camera is the wealth of excellent photography apps.

Cydia Is Now Saving SHSH Blobs For iOS 5.0.1 Firmware

What exactly are SHSH blobs and why are they required? An SHSH blob is a signature file which is verified against the Apple servers to ensure that the device is running the latest version of the firmware. The purpose of caching these signature files is to allow users to downgrade firmware, effectively restoring the device to an older version of iOS.

With the release of the iPhone 3GS; Apple decided not to just implement local protections, and instead made it so that every restore of a device would need to be individually verified by their servers. This is evident within iTunes during a restore, by looking at the top information bar you will be able to see ‘Verifying restore with Apple…’

The process consists of a simple challenge / response protocol which uploads a partial digest of the firmware file to Apple, which then decided whether or not to allow the restore. The caching of the users SHSH effectively allows this process to be bypassed, verifying the restore via Saurik’s servers instead.

An alternative to Cydia automatically performing this process is using the tool created by @ih8sn0w called iFaith which is dubbed as the first public SHSH dumper which allows users to dump the SHSH signatures of a devices current running firmware. Whilst similar in end result to methods like Cydia and TinyUmbrella, iFaith goes that step further and allows actual physical retrieval of the SHSH blobs. It is also worth noting that iFaith has no actual time constraints and can dump a devices signatures even after Apple has stop signing that firmware.

Getting back to Cydia, if indeed Cydia has started caching blobs once more, it comes at a perfect time with the impending release of the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak. The jailbreak, set to be released imminently by the Chronic Dev Team will more than likely be followed up by a point release from Apple to iOS 5.0.2 (or 5.1) which will attempt to close the exploit used in the 5.0.1 untether.

All seems well at the present for the jailbreak community with Cydia back in action, a jailbreak coming and a multitude of tools available for us to use.

DFU mode for beginners

What is DFU mode?
Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode is a special failsafe mode which Apple has built into all of their devices so that they can restored to a stock iOS firmware regardless of the state they may be in. It is implemented at a lower level than the normal recovery mode, which shows the "connect to iTunes cable" graphic on the screen of the iPhone. DFU mode by contrast has a completely blank screen so there is no way to tell you are in DFU mode by looking at the device.

What's the difference between DFU and normal recovery mode?
When your iPhone is in normal recovery mode you will see a graphic like this...

(remember, if you see this picture you are NOT in DFU mode)

iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak tutorial

The latest version of Redsn0w, which is 0.9.9b8, can tether jailbreaking the iOS 5.0.1. However, before proceeding, there are a few points users must be aware of.

In a recent tweet, iOS hacker @pod2g warned users saying that those still waiting for an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5, should not upgrade to iOS 5.0.1.

"Note about 5.0.1: don't update if you plan on jbking : the bug Charlie MILLER found can simplify exploits dramatically and will be closed," he tweeted.

According to reports, no method has been figured out yet to downgrade to iOS 5. Hence, if you upgrade to iOS 5.0.1, you might lose the chance of a potentially untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.

For those who already have iOS 5.0.1 running on their devices and wish to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1, here are the steps:

Install Siri Dictation On iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS And iPod touch 4G Using Siri0us

Great news for iPhone 4 users who have been waiting to get Siri on their devices; while hackers have been working a lot to port Siri on iPhone 4, some could now make Siri dictation available for free for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users. Siri dictation is a part from the full Siri part. Let’s have small how to guide below.
Siri on iPhone 4 has already been fully ported and we’ve seen it also on iPod touch 4G and iPhone 3GS. The port will not be released until an iPhone 4S is released to the public. Today, developer Eric Day developed a jailbreak tweak which brings Siri’s “dictation” on your iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

The Lost Steve Jobs Interview Was Recovered

Robert Cringely, employee number 12 at Apple and host of "Triumph of the Nerds", reveals how he recovered the lost interview with Steve Jobs.

"This is from my documentary series called 'Triumph of the Nerds' made in 1995. We interviewed 125 Silicon Valley luminaries including Steve Jobs for that three hour series which has been seen in sixty countries. We only used nine minutes out of the sixty nine minute Jobs interview and then all of the master tapes were lost. Until, Steve Jobs died on October 5th and the director said, 'I think I kept a copy of that Jobs interview. Let's go look for it' - in his garage."

Most Likely iPad Buyer Is a Male, Pet-Owning and a Gamer

While the iPad is clearly a hit among lots of demographics, from non-reading toddlers to senior citizens, there are still certain sets of people that are more likely to go out and buy one of the Apple tablets. The folks at marketing firm BlueKai have compiled some of that data into a handy infographic.
Among the three characteristics most tied to iPad purchasing are being male, a pet-owner and into video games. Close behind are scientists, travelers (both international and domestic) and, bizarrely, organic food proponents. Perhaps the latter, though, is tied to having the kind of disposable income necessary to purchase a device that, while undeniably fun and useful, likely doesn’t replace any other device.
Of course, as previously mentioned, the tablet’s popularity extends even to female liberal arts majors who don’t care whether their food is processed. Indeed, a recent survey by Nielsen shows that the iPad is tops on the holiday wish lists for kids of all genders and food preferences.

iPhone 4S vs. Samsung Galaxy S II Drop Test

Dropping mobile electronics is a fact of life. If it's something that you carry around with you and handle regularly, it's going to get dropped. You never mean to drop it, but sometimes those fingers of yours are mysteriously and momentarily greased with butter and gravity takes over.
The iPhone 4S shares the same glass front and back design as its predecessor. While this makes for shiny, glossy and relatively scratch proof (compared to plastic) surfaces that are quite radio transparent, they're prone to shattering. Even with the antenna problem fixed in the new phone, owners of the iPhone 4S will be much safer with a case – or the new AppleCare+ plan, which covers accidental damage.

Gmail App For iOS Returns to App Store – Download Now!

The Gmail app for iOS has returned to the App Store two weeks after Google pulled it.
The native app brought the functionality of Gmail to the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. However, despite its features, the app suffered from several fatal flaws, including the nasty bug that broke iOS notifications. As a result, Google pulled the app hours after its launch. The app also received negative reviews for its lack of functionality.
“Two weeks ago, we introduced our Gmail app for iOS,” Google Product Manager Matthew Izatt says in a blog post. “Unfortunately it contained a bug which broke notifications and displayed an error message, so we removed it from the App Store. We’ve fixed the bug and notifications are now working, and the app is back in the App Store.”

How to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad

Jailbreak iOS 5.01
Apple released iOS 5.0.1 this week and there’s already a way to jailbreak it. But there are a few things to keep in mind before you jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.
First, this is a tethered jailbreak, which means you’ll need to connect your device to a computer and run the software again anytime you need to reboot.
Second, you might not want to update to iOS 5.0.1 at all if you’re holding out hope for anuntethered jailbreak. An exploit was discovered in iOS 5.0 which may be used in a future untethered jailbreak tool, but if you update now there’s no good way to roll back to iOS 5.0 so you may not be able to use the new tools once their available.
Third, there’s currently no way to jailbreak an iPhone 4S or iPad 2.

Apple set to release iOS 5.0.2 next week

An Apple engineer quoted by a German Mac-centric blog says iOS 5.0.2 is on its way to iCustomers next week, with iOS 5.1 following soon thereafter with a few tweaks aimed to make Siri smarter.

Apple may reportedly release another iOS 5 update as early as next week to fix the battery issue for good and further improvements to its Siri voice-controlled assistant app are also in the works.
According to German site, MackerKopf.de, an iOS 5.0.2 update is already on its way, while work is also underway for the first major iOS 5 upgrade, which should come as version 5.1 on the market.
